about

"Wait to Turn Out the Lights" was written as part of my year-long songwriting challenge. Starting in June of 2019, I began writing and releasing new songs every three weeks for the next year.

This song is a simple song about feeling far away from those who you're close to. Lyrically, I based it off my experiences of being on the road as a touring musician. There'd be a lot of late nights where my I'd call my wife and she would be wrapping up for the day before our band had even played our set. The distance is tough, and the emotion I would always get on these calls would be "we'll be back home together soon." Hence the main line in the chorus: "Wait to turn out the lights, I'm coming home."

Musically it's a bluesy cowboy song based around some pretty finger-picking guitar. There's a couple slide guitar solos in there too, and this was my first go at recording some slide work. If you're into chill, acoustic love songs with a little bit of bluesy flair a la Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits, or Johnny Cash - this one's for you!

lyrics

I know it's late, you probably had a long day
I've got the butterflies, I'm not sure what to say
If I could hold your hand, I think that'd go away
Wait to turn out the lights, I'm coming home

Dig you light those candles that you like in our room?
I know that summer's coming, are the lilies staring to bloom?
I check my watch, it must be late for you
Wait to turn out the lights, I'm coming home

Hold on tight to lullabies for now
Another night, another lonely town
The sunset's lost somewhere behind the clouds
Wait to turn out the lights, I'm coming home

Maybe we can meet up where the road ends
Listen to that old tape of "Blowin' in the Wind"
My watch stopped ticking, maybe we can pretend
Wait to turn out the lights
