about
"Summertime" was written as part of my year-long songwriting challenge. Starting in June of 2019, I began writing and releasing new songs every three weeks for the next year.
"Summertime" is my humble attempt to write a simple love song in the style of a Leonard Cohen ballad: honest, playful, nostalgic, and longing. I don't usually go for the romantic material when I'm writing, but with winter starting to break and getting to spend some extra time with my lovely wife, Erin, due to the COVID-19 quarantine, I kept thinking about the summer the two of us met. We were young, dumb, broke, and in love and had no idea what the future had in store. 10 years later, we're a little less young, a little less dumb, a little less broke, but still deeply in love. This song is me trying to capture some of my gratitude for her and sum it up into some simple words of thanks.
"Summertime" features a lot of jangly folk instruments like mandolin and banjo, and I actually convinced Erin to record some flute for this track as well. If you're into simple, honest love songs with folky overtones, this one is for you!
lyrics
There was a time
With magic in the air
I wore a tie
You had flowers in your hair
The stars seem a little brighter
When we remember those nights
Thanks for the dance
In summertime
There was a time
When we were walking through dreams
Not a care in the world
Just you and me
When we remember those days
There's a little more sunshine
Thanks for the dance
In summertime
Thank you for loving me
When we didn't have a dime
Thank you for loving me
When my songs don't seem to rhyme
Thank you for loving me
Even when I don't know why
Thanks for the dance
in summertime
There was a time
When everything seemed out of tune
My words would play hide-and-seek
At least when I was talking to you
Wherever I looked
All I could seem to find
Was thanks for the dance
In summertime
Thank you for loving me
When we didn't have a dime
Thank you for loving me
When my songs don't seem to rhyme
Thank you for loving me
Even when I don't know why
Thanks for the dance
in summertime
