about

"Keep Your Candles Burning" was written as part of my year-long songwriting challenge. Starting in June of 2019, I began writing and releasing new songs every three weeks for the next year.

"Keep Your Candles Burning" is a more personal song than some of my other recent ones. The idea for the song came about when I was reviewing some old recordings of songs I wrote over five or six years ago. These old songs came after a point in my life where I was depressed all the time and had pretty much given up on making music. It got pretty dark, but I eventually made it through. A big part of what got me out of that place was starting to make music again.

Those recordings were some of the first songs I wrote during that time. They were honestly pretty bad and morose, and I can laugh about that now, but they were super important to helping me move back towards music. When I was listening to them, I kept feeling like those songs came from a different lifetime, like a completely different person had written them. I decided to write "Keep Your Candles Burning" as a conversation between the person who wrote those songs and the person I am today. I tried to capture the honest and personal nature of the song in the recording process and it ended up taking on the feel of a Tom Waits style ballad: a slow-moving polka beat, finger-picked guitar, and lots of lively room ambiance. If you're into that type of thing, this one's for you!

lyrics

Why won't you say what happened?
Is it something I said?
I've been trying to walk those miles in your shoes
But my feet seem just a little too big

Why do you say it's OK?
Even though it's not?
I can't trust my mirrors anymore
I guess you should stand and talk a bow

Keep your candles burning
Sometimes we need the light
Keep your candles burning
Sometimes we need the light

Breathe in, breathe out
Feel the air in your lungs
Maybe that's enough
At least for today

What else can I say?
Try to be yourself
Follow the joyful path
Sounds corny but it's true
I know 'cause I'm walking it too

Keep your candles burning
Sometimes we need the light
Keep your candles burning
Sometimes we need the light
