about

"Feed the Megalomaniac" was written as part of a year-long songwriting challenge started in the Summer of 2019. Fair Warning: this one got weird.

When I started writing this tune, I was heavily influenced by the song "The Mercy Seat" by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. Definitely worth a listen if you're not familiar with it (Also worth a listen to the Johnny Cash cover of it from his American Recordings). One of my favorite things about that song is how it plays with layering different sonic textures to continually add tension as the song progresses. and I wanted to do something similar as I started writing thing this track.

What I ended up with was "Feed the Megalomaniac." A piece built around harsh, grating textures that I got through experimenting with unorthodox ways of playing different instruments. Lyrically, it's got a lot of spoken-word influence, drawing inspiration from poets like Patti Smith and The Last Poets. I wanted to create a sense of dark chaos to go with all of the gnarly harmonic stuff going on behind the voices, so the lyrics are drawn from dark and chaotic emotions that I think we all have deep inside us.

It's definitely one of my more experimental songs, but if you dig that kind of thing, this one's for you!

lyrics

you are your own revolution
at least that's what you say
every mob is made up of
individuals just like me
you're singing louder to drown
out the voices in your head
you are your own revolution

feed the megalomaniac
feed the megalomaniac
feed the megalomaniac

you are your own revolution
at least that's what you say
burn the bridges
burn the boats
burn the witches
they stole a piece of you
and took it away

you give
you give you give
you give you give
and they take
and they take
and they take

you are your own revolution
at least that's what you say
you say every mob is made up
of individuals just like me
and you're just sitting
at the master's feet

you genuflect at the altar
and harmonize
with the shadows
darkness calls you
by your name
with love

you see jesus in the mirror
you are your own revolution
at least that's what you say
burn the bridges
burn the boats
burn the witches
they stole a piece of you
and took it away

and you give
and you give
and you give
and they take
and they take
and they take

you are your own revolution
at least that's what you say
every mob is made up
of individuals just like me
and you're singing louder to drown
out the voices in your head
you are your own revolution
at least that's what you say

you are your own revolution
at least that's what you say
they haven't invented the
words yet for what you are
you're drifting through the stars
you're on a higher plane
who cares what those small-
minded people think down there
who cares what they say

they don't understand you
they're not evolved enough
they never will understand you
you're drifting through the stars
you're on a higher plane
you see jesus in the mirror
you are your own revolution
at least that's what you say

burn the bridges
burn the boats
burn the witches
burn the bitches
they stole a piece of you
and took it away
and you give and you give
and you give
and they take and they take
and they take

every mob is made up
of individuals just like me
and you're just sitting
at the master's feet
you genuflect at the altar
and you harmonize
with the shadows
darkness calls you
by your name
with love

you see jesus in the mirror
you are your own revolution
at least that's what you say

and you're tired
tired of tiptoeing through
the trauma ward
you're tired
tired of whispering through
the newspaper walls

you're tired because these
people don't understand you
they never will
you're drifting through the stars
you're on a higher plane
who cares what those small-
minded people think
who cares what they say

you'd be able to get ahead
but they're standing
in your path
fuck it just
burn the bridges they're
standing on and
watch them turn to ash
burn it all down and
see what stays
in the light of day

you are your own revolution
at least that's what you say
you see jesus in the mirror
hallelujah sing it again
you are your own revolution
at least that's what you say
burn the bridges
burn the boats
burn the witches
burn the bitches

the stole a piece of you
and took it away
and you give and you give
and you give
and they take and they take
and they take
every mob is made up of
individuals just like me
and you're just here
sitting at the master's feet

you genuflect at the altar
and harmonize
with the shadows
darkness calls you
by your name
with love

you are your own revolution
at least that's what you say

and if i'm honest

that could be me

and if i'm honest

that could be me

if i just
feed the megalomaniac

if i just
feed the megalomaniac

feed the megalomaniac

sing louder to drown
out the voices in my head

feed the megalomaniac

be the revolution

at least that's what you say

that could be me
if i'm honest with myself
if i just
feed the megalomaniac

feed the megalomaniac

sing louder to drown
out the voices in my head

you are your own revolution
at least that's what you say
burn the bridges
burn the boats
burn the witches
they stole a piece of you
and took it away

and if i'm honest

that could be me

if i just
feed the megalomaniac

feed the megalomaniac

feed the megalomaniac

and if i'm honest...
