about

"Eye of the Storm" was written as part of a year-long songwriting challenge started in the Summer of 2019. This one is a bit longer and more experimental. It was built around a sea-shanty type melody that I wrote on my mandolin. The arrangement plays with different textures from folk instruments (including banjo, cigar-box guitar, and hand drums) played in traditional and non-traditional ways.

If you're into folk-inspired, bluesy singer/songwriter tunes with dark sensibilities in the vein of songwriters like Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Tom Waits, and Leonard Cohen - this one's for you!

lyrics

Probably knew that we were going our separate ways
From the very start
Setting sail for the East
As soon as we heard the whistle blow
Got heads full of thunder
And we're leaving on clouds of smoke
Burn it all to the ground
And try to start again

Where did you go
When the lightning came close?
There's a storm rolling in up ahead
No way around so
steady as she goes
Straight to the eye of the storm

There's a man painted red from his heads to his hands
But it makes no difference to me
Even though you're home
You're still far from the countryside
You look through old photographs
But you can't recognize those faces anymore
The beautiful and the damned
Dance side by side

Where did you go
When the lightning came close?
There's a storm rolling in up ahead
No way around so
steady as she goes
Straight to the eye of the storm

Can we speak before we dance?
'Cause I was never good at talking with my feet
I once heard that wringing your hands
Stops you from rolling up your sleeves
We all wish it was different
But no one quite comes home from that
The beautiful and the damned
are dancing side by side

Where did you go
When the lightning came close?
There's a storm rolling in up ahead
No way around so
steady as she goes
Straight to the eye of the storm
